What is a dog breed

Dog breeds are specific breeding forms of the domesticated dog that differ from each other through various characteristics. These include, for example, coat color and length, muzzle shape, shoulder height, but also character traits such as hunting instinct.

The breeding standards of the various dog breeds are set by breeding associations or individuals and can be officially recognized by clubs or associations. The world's largest association is the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), the umbrella organization for cynology, the science of dogs.

The origin of dog breeds

Dogs are considered man's best friend for a reason. Our four-legged companions have been by our side for thousands of years. Despite their peaceful and loyal nature, they originally descended from wolves. Scientists suspect that wolves gradually sought the proximity of humans over time.

Humans took advantage of the abilities of these wild animals by breeding them, for example, for hunting. From the 19th century onwards, dogs were increasingly bred as pets. Today, they live in over ten million households in Germany.

Dogs without a specific breed

There are also dogs that do not belong to a specific breed. Such mixed-breed dogs arise from the crossing of different breeds and are called mongrels. Designer dogs or hybrid dogs like the Labradoodle, on the other hand, are created by deliberately mating two specific breeds.

Which dog breeds exist today?

Over the centuries, new dog breeds have been bred again and again, some of which no longer exist today. World War II greatly decimated many dog breeds, as many animals were used for military service.

Today, it is estimated that there are over 800 different dog breeds worldwide. However, only about 350 are currently officially recognized by the FCI. In Germany, around 8.6 million dogs live, of which about 69 percent are purebred and 31 percent are mixed breeds.

The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), founded in 1911, acts as the world organization for cynology and oversees existing dog breeds and their respective breed standards. Dog breeds are divided into 10 different FCI groups:

  • Group 1: Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs
  • Group 2: Pinschers and Schnauzers, Molossers, Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs and other breeds
  • Group 3: Terriers
  • Group 4: Dachshunds
  • Group 5: Spitz and primitive types
  • Group 6: Scent hounds, bloodhounds and related breeds
  • Group 7: Pointing dogs
  • Group 8: Retrievers, flushing dogs, water dogs
  • Group 9: Companion and toy dogs
  • Group 10: Sighthounds

The most popular dog breeds in Germany include the Labrador, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Jack Russell Terrier, Australian Shepherd, Yorkshire Terrier, and Dachshund. The Chihuahua, one of the smallest recognized dog breeds, weighs only two to three kilograms and reaches a shoulder height of just 15 to 23 centimeters. Among the largest breeds are the Great Dane with a shoulder height of at least 80 centimeters and the Irish Wolfhound, which can reach up to 95 centimeters tall.

What are the most popular dog breeds

As a little inspiration, we present the most popular dog breeds. Every year, the Association for German Canine Affairs (VDH) creates a ranking of the most popular dog breeds based on the official puppy statistics of the previous year.

According to the VDH, these are currently the top 5 most popular dog breeds:

  • German Shepherd
  • Dachshund
  • German Wirehaired Pointer
  • Labrador Retriever
  • Golden Retriever
  • Poodle
  • Rottweiler
  • German Boxer

Which dog breed suits me?

Choosing the right dog breed is an important step that should be well thought out. The ideal dog should not only be chosen for its appearance, but also for its temperament, size, and needs that should fit your lifestyle. Here are some factors you should consider when choosing the right dog breed.

Lifestyle: Are you an active person who likes to be outdoors, or do you prefer to stay indoors and relax? Some dog breeds, such as the Border Collie or Australian Shepherd, need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, while others, like the French Bulldog, are more laid-back and calm.

Living situation: Do you have a large garden or do you live in an apartment? Larger dog breeds need more space to romp, while smaller dogs can also feel comfortable in an apartment.

Time: Dogs need attention, care, and training. Puppies usually require more time and patience than adult dogs. Breeds like the Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever are known to get along well with families, but they also need plenty of time for training and play.

Allergies: Some dog breeds are better suited for allergy sufferers. Breeds like the Poodle or Bichon Frise are known to shed fewer allergens.

Experience: Some dog breeds are easier for first-time owners to handle, while others, like the Siberian Husky or Akita, require an experienced hand.

Also remember that every dog is unique and its behavior is influenced by many factors, including its upbringing and environment. Regardless of breed, it is important that you are ready to give your new four-legged friend the love and care they deserve. Visit animal shelters and rescue groups, and remember that a mixed-breed dog can also be a great companion.
